Official BL Turbocharger Rebuild Service

Built by Us.
Rebuilt by Us.

Every Boost Lab turbocharger is assembled by the same technician, to the same standard, every time. BL turbos are built on quality Garrett and MHI-based internals -- the same components we use to build them are the same components we use to rebuild them. The difference is that we know exactly what spec your turbo was built to.

The Rebuild Advantage
Why Your BL Turbo Comes
Back to Us

A BL turbocharger is not a stock unit. Every one is a modified build assembled in-house with components and specifications that are proprietary to Boost Lab. Sending it anywhere else means sending it somewhere that does not know what is inside it.

We Know the Spec

Every BL turbo is assembled to a known specification. The compressor wheel trim, turbine wheel design, bearing selection, and balance target are all documented. We rebuild to that exact spec -- the same Garrett and MHI-based internals used to build your turbo originally go back into it on the rebuild.

Same Technician Standard

Every BL turbocharger is built by the same technician for quality assurance. That same standard applies to every rebuild. Your turbo is not a production line unit and the rebuild does not treat it like one.

Carbon Seal Expertise

The BL Carbon Seal turbos use a Garrett-style carbon seal architecture with a Boost Lab proprietary seal plate. The seal plate is a BL-specific component. When a carbon seal unit comes in for rebuild, we restore it to the original BL build spec -- the same assembly standard as when it left our shop.

VSR Balanced to Spec

Every BL turbo leaves the shop VSR balanced. Every rebuild returns VSR balanced to the same target. A turbo rebuilt without VSR is not a turbo rebuilt to BL standard.

Subaru Bolt-On
Turbo Upgrades

Boost Lab is regarded as one of the best in the industry for Subaru bolt-on turbocharger upgrades. The BL Subaru lineup covers EJ-engine WRX, STi, and Legacy GT through the current FA24-powered 2022+ WRX. Every unit is a direct bolt-on replacement built to exceed OEM specifications.

The lineup offers two compressor wheel options on most models -- billet for maximum strength and aerodynamic efficiency under sustained high-boost operation, and cast for a more accessible price point with the same Boost Lab assembly standard. The HF (High Flow) variants use a higher flowing turbine wheel design that improves exhaust gas evacuation and extends the power band compared to the standard turbine configuration.

Every Subaru BL turbo is a direct bolt-on to the OEM location with no fabrication required. The rebuild process mirrors the original build process -- same components, same balance spec, same technician standard.

HF (High Flow) Turbine: The HF variants feature a higher flowing turbine wheel design. This is not a compressor-only change. The turbine wheel specification is different from the standard build and must be accounted for during any rebuild. Sending an HF to a generic shop that does not know the turbine spec risks returning the wrong configuration.
Billet vs Cast: Billet compressor wheels are CNC machined from a single billet blank for tighter tolerances and higher strength at sustained boost. Both variants are VSR balanced at the same specification, but billet wheels require specific balance attention given their different mass distribution compared to cast wheels.

Proprietary Design
BL Carbon Seal
Turbochargers

The BL Carbon Seal turbocharger line uses a Garrett-style carbon seal architecture paired with Boost Lab proprietary seal plates manufactured to our own specifications. Carbon seals offer superior sealing performance compared to standard piston ring seals under high-boost, high-temperature conditions -- reducing oil consumption past the seals and improving long-term reliability under sustained performance use.

The seal plate is a BL-specific component. The rebuild restores the turbo to the original BL assembly standard with the correct seal plate and new internal components as required.

When a Carbon Seal unit comes in for rebuild we assess the seal condition, compressor and turbine wheel condition, and bearing housing. The rebuild restores everything to the original BL build spec with new internals and seal components as required.

Rebuild Triggers
When a BL Turbo
Needs Service

A properly installed BL turbocharger running clean oil in a healthy engine does not wear out on a predictable schedule. Rebuild need is condition-based. These are the primary causes we see.

01
Engine Failure Contamination
The most common reason a BL turbo comes in for rebuild is an engine event. A spun bearing, ring failure, or head gasket failure sends contaminated oil through the turbo oil supply. The turbo bearings see degraded or contaminated oil and are compromised. Any engine failure on a Subaru should be followed by turbo inspection before returning to service -- the turbo bears the consequences of what happens upstream of it.
02
Foreign Object Damage (FOD)
Intake-side FOD -- debris ingested through the air filter -- contacts the compressor wheel at operating speed and causes immediate damage. Turbine-side FOD from broken exhaust components contacts the turbine wheel. Either event typically requires compressor or turbine wheel replacement in addition to a full bearing rebuild. The wheel condition is inspected and documented at teardown before any quote is issued.
03
Improper Installation
A BL turbo installed without priming the oil system, with an obstructed oil feed line, with the oil drain line kinked or running uphill, or with contaminated oil from the first startup will fail faster than one installed correctly. Bearing damage from dry-start or oil starvation at initial startup is not covered under warranty but is fully rebuildable. We document the bearing condition and oil passages to identify installation-related damage.
04
Extended High-Boost Operation
BL turbos are built to handle sustained performance use. Under extreme track duty, high-boost tuning above the designed operating range, or extended competition use, bearing wear accumulates faster than street use. High-performance applications running above the designed boost level should be inspected periodically rather than waiting for audible symptoms. Early inspection catches bearing wear before it becomes wheel contact damage.
